The Mekong Region is a robust economic region comprised of countries bound together by the Mekong River which runs though China (Yunnan Province), Myanmar (or Burma), Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
 
With assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the six countries entered into a program of sub-regional economic cooperation, the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), designed to enhance economic relations among the countries through the implementation of high priority subregional projects in transport, energy, telecommunications, environment, human resource development, tourism, trade, private sector investment, and agriculture.
 
The GMS, rich in human and natural resources, has enjoyed Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth averaging about 7% a year sinceits inception, making the region the new frontier of Asian economic growth.
